Email & SMS Marketing for Small Shopify Brands, September 2026: Klaviyo vs Omnisend vs Mailchimp vs Drip vs Sendlane vs Brevo
Live pricing at 500, 2,500 and 10,000 contacts, SMS add-on costs, free-tier limits, Shopify App Store and G2 complaints, the 2025–26 deals and layoffs, the built-in threat from Shopify Messaging — and where a small brand or a small competitor should go.

Read this first. This is a free, public teardown published by KeenScout to show how we work. It is business research about what six vendors sell, charge and are criticised for; it is not advice on email compliance, consent law or deliverability engineering. Every figure carries a footnote to the page we read. Where a vendor’s pricing page rendered only a starting price to our fetcher, we say so and cite the third-party pricing guide we used instead, with its “last updated” date. Where a figure could not be verified from a source we could actually open, we write “not disclosed” or “not retrievable” rather than guess. Contact-tier prices in this category change every few months — re-check before you quote them in a deck.
1Executive summary — the five findings that matter
The free tiers of the three biggest platforms are now identical — 250 contacts and 500 emails a month — and the real free tier for a Shopify store is Shopify’s own. Klaviyo,[2] Omnisend[6] and Mailchimp[7] all stop at 250 contacts / 500 sends; Brevo caps sends at 300 a day but not contacts;[17] Drip and Sendlane have no free plan at all.[12][14] Meanwhile Shopify Messaging gives every Basic-and-up merchant “10,000 free emails to send at the beginning of every month,” then $1 per 1,000.[18] A 2,000-contact store sending weekly never pays Shopify a cent for email. The vendors’ free plans are trial funnels; Shopify’s is a product.
At 2,500 contacts the two market leaders cost exactly the same — $60 a month — and the challengers cluster $16–$21 below them. Klaviyo Email is $60 at 2,500 active profiles[3] and Mailchimp Standard is $60 at 2,500 contacts;[8] Omnisend Standard is $44,[5] Drip is $39,[10] Brevo Starter at 10,000 emails a month is $17.[17] At 10,000 contacts the spread widens to $132 (Omnisend), $135 (Mailchimp), $150 (Klaviyo) and $154 (Drip).[5][8][3][12] The list price is not what people complain about, though. What they complain about is who counts as a contact: Klaviyo moved to billing on all “active profiles” in February 2025 and had to cap the resulting jumps at 25%;[46] Mailchimp bills for unsubscribed contacts;[8] Omnisend bills “non-subscribers” who abandoned a cart.[6]
SMS is where the fine print moved in 2026. Per-message US rates are tightly bunched — Klaviyo about $0.012 at 1,250 credits,[62] Shopify Messaging $0.012,[19] Sendlane $0.009,[14] Omnisend $0.007–$0.009[4] — but the bundles are not. Omnisend ended its “subscription price = SMS credits” rebate for Pro customers who joined after 4 May 2026;[6] Drip closed SMS to new accounts and keeps it US-only;[12][13] Mailchimp’s SMS credits “expire monthly and do not roll over”;[9] Klaviyo’s Email + SMS plan costs $15 more than Email at every tier.[3] A 2,500-contact brand that sends two texts a month to 1,000 SMS subscribers is buying roughly $24 of messages, and the vendors are competing on how that $24 is packaged, not priced.
The middle of the market is consolidating, and the top is spending on agents. Privy acquired Sendlane on 2 February 2026;[56] Brevo raised €500M at a $1B+ valuation in December 2025 on €200M ARR and says acquisitions will drive 45% of its growth to 2030;[58] Klaviyo posted $370.6M Q2 revenue (+26%), guided to $1.53B for the year and bought agent startup Agency in August;[44][45] Intuit cut 17% of its workforce in May 2026 while disclosing that Mailchimp revenue declined year over year and naming “rightsizing” Mailchimp as part of the plan.[52] Brevo’s own Shopify app is gone from the store, replaced by the PushOwl app it bought.[30][31] Drip has gone the other way: a $39 minimum, no free plan and no SMS for new customers.[54][12]
Every vendor’s worst reviews are about the same two things — billing and support — and nobody has fixed them. On the Shopify App Store the one-star share is 8% for Klaviyo (259 reviews),[20] 7% for Mailchimp,[24] 4% for Omnisend[22] and 21% for Sendlane (3 of 14).[28] The complaints read alike: “My monthly price went from 80usd to 150usd,”[21] “they automatically switched me to a more expensive plan,”[25] “cannot downgrade subscription without contacting live chat,”[23] “no way to get basic support unless you upgrade to a paid plan.”[21] G2 counts the same pattern at scale: 73 Klaviyo reviews cite expense, 40 cite slow support.[36] For a small competitor, the open lane is not a feature; it is a bill a merchant can predict and a human who answers.
2Market context in one page
Scale. The vendors’ own numbers, unaudited: Klaviyo claims “205,000+ relationship-driven brands across 100 countries” and 350+ integrations;[48] Omnisend says 150,000 online stores use it and it employs 250+ people;[50] Brevo claims 600,000+ customers and 1,000 employees;[58][59] Mailchimp says “millions” of users and 33,000+ reviews across rating sites;[53] Privy, Sendlane’s new owner, serves “more than 6,000 ecommerce brands”;[56] Drip says “thousands of ecommerce teams.”[55] On the Shopify App Store, review volume is a rough proxy for install base among small merchants: Shopify Messaging 4,433 reviews, Klaviyo 3,271, Omnisend 2,965, Brevo PushOwl 2,229, Mailchimp 1,441, Drip 51, Sendlane 14.[34][20][22][32][24][26][28]
Where the money is. Two disclosed revenue anchors: Klaviyo at $370.6M for Q2 2026 with full-year guidance of $1.526–$1.534B, 109% net revenue retention and 4,477 customers paying over $50K a year;[44] Brevo past €200M ARR with double-digit EBITDA margins.[58] Mailchimp revenue is reported inside Intuit’s Global Business Solutions segment, which grew 17% excluding Mailchimp versus 15% reported — i.e., Mailchimp shrank.[52] Omnisend, Drip and Sendlane revenue: not disclosed.
The strategic shift. Klaviyo no longer calls itself an email tool; the homepage says “The Autonomous B2C CRM,” lists eight channels (email, SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, push, social, Customer Hub, reviews) and three agents (Composer, Customer Agent, Remix) plus an MCP server for Claude.[48] Brevo sells “Aura” agents for marketing, sales, data and conversations, and a full sales CRM.[59] Mailchimp leads with “Intuit Intelligence” in beta.[53] Omnisend, by contrast, markets against the trend — “Email & SMS marketing so good, it’s boring” — and promises a bill “up to 35% smaller” than Klaviyo’s with a free five-day migration.[51] Drip’s homepage is a switching pitch: “Switch and save up to 40% on your email bill.”[55]
The platform backdrop. Shopify Email became Shopify Messaging: native SMS campaigns arrived in the Winter ’26 Edition (January 2026) and WhatsApp was announced in the Spring ’26 Edition (17 June 2026), rolling out gradually.[60] In the same window Shopify and Klaviyo announced a deeper integration (Locale Aware Catalogs, native Shopify Markets support, 9 March 2026).[47] Shopify is simultaneously the channel every vendor depends on and the competitor with the only genuinely free product.
3Competitor profiles
Prices are monthly list prices in USD for the entry paid plan unless noted, from the vendor’s own pricing page captured 5–6 Sept 2026 where it rendered, otherwise from the named third-party guide with its update date. Review data is from the platform named. Shopify App Store ratings are as displayed on 5–6 Sept 2026.
Free $0. Email plan: $20 at 251–500 active profiles; $60 at 2,500; $150 at 10,000. Email + SMS: $35 / $75 / $165 at the same tiers.[3][2] Klaviyo’s own pricing page rendered only its header to our fetcher;[1] the Shopify listing confirms “Email plan: $20/month (251–500 contacts)” and “SMS plan: $15/month (up to 1,250 SMS/MMS credits).”[20] Paid plans carry a “10x profile send limit.”[3]
SMS add-on
1,250 credits for $15; 1 credit per US SMS, 3 per MMS, 5 credits per UK SMS.[3][2] Effective US rate ≈ $0.012 per SMS at 1,250 credits, falling to ≈ $0.0092 at 12,500.[62]
Free-tier limits
“Up to 250 active profiles and a 500-email send limit/month” with “150 monthly mobile messaging credits.”[3]
Positioning
“The Autonomous B2C CRM.” 205,000+ brands; 350+ integrations; “2.5B average events processed daily”; agents Composer (“creates an entire on-brand campaign” from a prompt) and Customer Agent (“resolves 65% of questions autonomously”); SOC 2, ISO 27001, EU + US data residency.[48] Shopify listing tagline: “Email marketing, SMS, & WhatsApp that turn messages into sales.”[20]
Partner-led: “6,000+ agency partners,” a directory at connect.klaviyo.com, and the pitch that “for every $1 in Klaviyo MRR, partners report at least $3 in implementation, strategy, and managed services.”[49] Co-marketing with Shopify (joint press release, March 2026).[47] Investor-relations cadence as PR (quarterly BusinessWire releases).[44] Klaviyo is the reference competitor in everyone else’s SEO: Omnisend, Drip and Sendlane each maintain “vs Klaviyo” or “Klaviyo pricing” pages.[3][51][57]
Recent news
Billing switched to “active profiles” on 18 Feb 2025, applied to all existing customers, with any single increase capped at 25%.[46] Q2 2026 (5 Aug): revenue $370.6M, +26%; FY guide $1.526–1.534B; 4,477 customers over $50K ARR (+36%); NRR 109%; launched Composer, Customer Agent upgrades and K:Social; Claude and Figma integrations.[44] Acquired Agency (AI customer-success startup, $32M raised, 25 staff; terms undisclosed) with founder Elias Torres becoming CPO.[45] Layoffs 2025–26: none found in coverage we could open.
Most common complaints (near-verbatim)
“My monthly price went from 80usd to 150usd. And if I pause and resubscribe, it would be 200usd.” — Shopify App Store, May 2026[21]
“When encountering technical issues, there is no way to get basic support unless you upgrade to a paid plan.” — Shopify App Store, Aug 2026[21]
“The email marketing editor is unbelievably complicated for absolutely no reason.” — Shopify App Store, May 2026[21]
“I have already uninstalled the app, it is still charging my company card for service fee.” — Shopify App Store, June 2026[21]
“Users face a steep learning curve with Klaviyo, requiring considerable time to understand its platform effectively.” — G2 summary, 63 reviews[36]
Read: Klaviyo is the default for a reason — the deepest Shopify integration, the biggest partner channel and the only vendor here shipping agents at scale. Its exposure is the bill: active-profile billing turned a tool merchants loved into one they audit, and the one-star share on the Shopify listing (8%) is double Omnisend’s.
3.2 Omnisend Price challengerEmail · SMS · push
Tiers & prices
Free $0. Standard from $16 at 500 contacts (“6,000 emails/mo,” “12× List”); Pro from $59 with “unlimited monthly emails.”[4][6] At 2,500 contacts: Standard $44, Pro $59; at 10,000: Standard $132, Pro $150 (emailtooltester, updated 5 Aug 2026).[5] A second guide (Retainful, June 2026) shows Standard at $40 / $130 for the same tiers, so treat the 2,500 and 10,000 figures as ±$4.[63] The pricing page currently shows a 30%-off-for-three-months promotion ($11.20 Standard, $41.30 Pro).[4]
SMS add-on
Pay-per-message: $0.009 per US SMS at $10–$49.99 monthly spend, $0.0085 at $50–$999.99, $0.008 at $1,000+, “starting at $0.007” for high volume.[4] Pro subscribers who joined before 4 May 2026 “keep included SMS credits (subscription price = SMS credits)”; later subscribers do not.[6]
Free-tier limits
“Send up to 500 emails/month to a maximum of 250 unique contacts,” plus 500 web push notifications; all features available.[6][4] Billing counts both subscribers and “non-subscribers (not opted-in, but receive automated messages),” including cart abandoners.[6]
Positioning
“Email & SMS marketing so good, it’s boring. Big-platform features, smaller bill, migration’s on us.” Claims 150k brands, “$79 ROI” per $1 (internal 2025 analysis), “Pay up to 35% less” than Klaviyo, 24/7 support with “about 4 minutes” average response; comparison pages against Klaviyo, Mailchimp and Attentive; no WhatsApp.[51]
Comparison SEO is the engine: Omnisend’s “Klaviyo Pricing in 2026” explainer ranks first for Klaviyo pricing queries and is where many buyers learn Klaviyo’s tier table.[3] Free migration as an offer; awards (MarTech Breakthrough “Best Overall Email Marketing Company” 2025, Stevie Awards) as trust signals.[50][51]
Recent news
Founded 2014 as Soundest; “reached 150,000 online stores” in 2025; 250+ employees.[50] Funding and revenue: not disclosed on company pages. Pricing change: SMS-credit rebate removed for new Pro subscribers from 4 May 2026.[6] Layoffs, M&A: none found.
Most common complaints (near-verbatim)
“Cannot downgrade subscription without contacting live chat, deliberately deterring cancellations.” — Shopify App Store, June 2026[23]
“Hidden pricing: additional $500–$1,200/month charges not disclosed initially.” — Shopify App Store, Feb 2026[23]
“Harassed by multiple calls, SMS, and emails after app deletion.” — Shopify App Store, July 2026[23]
“Pricing discrepancies between Shopify and website, different rates for contacts vs. subscribers.” — Shopify App Store, Mar 2026[23]
“The reporting features could be more robust. I would like to see more detailed analytics without having to export data to other tools.” — G2[37]
Read: Omnisend has the best Shopify rating of the six and a clear “Klaviyo minus 30%” position, but its complaint profile is drifting toward the leader’s: contact-counting confusion, downgrade friction and retention outreach. Its own help centre’s May 2026 SMS change is the first sign that the price gap is being spent.
Free $0; Essentials $13 at 500 contacts, $45 at 2,500, $110 at 10,000 (10× contacts sends); Standard $20 / $60 / $135 (12× sends, 5 seats); Premium $350 flat (15× sends, unlimited seats). 15% annual discount.[7][8] “Overages apply if contact or email send limit is exceeded”; exact overage rates are not published.[7][9]
SMS add-on
“Credits are purchased in blocks as an add-on to a paid monthly or annual marketing plan”: 1,000 credits $20/month, 5,000 for $45, 10,000 for $90, 25,000 for $180, up to 450,000 for $2,500. “Unused credits expire monthly and do not roll over.” Per-message cost is not broken out.[7][9]
Free-tier limits
“Limit of 250 contacts,” “Max of 500/mo or 250/day” sends, one audience, one seat, single-step automations only.[7][8] New accounts “also start paying for unsubscribed contacts, and those who haven’t confirmed opt-in.”[8]
Positioning
“Email & SMS marketing minus the learning curve”; “Intuit Intelligence” (beta) and predictive segmentation; logos Spotify, Gap, Canva, Subway; Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe, Square integrations.[53] Shopify listing tagline: “Drive sales with smarter SMS and email marketing automation built for ecommerce brands.”[24]
Reviews
Shopify App Store: 4.8/5, 1,441 reviews — 82% five-star, 7% one-star (108).[24] G2: 4.3/5, 12,988 reviews — the largest corpus and the lowest score of the six.[38] Capterra: Mailchimp cites 4.5 stars on its homepage; the listing was not retrievable by us.[53]
Marketing
Brand and bundle: Mailchimp sits in the Intuit footer alongside TurboTax, QuickBooks and Credit Karma and is sold into the QuickBooks base.[53] Free plan as top-of-funnel; 14-day trials with “Send up to 100 emails without payment info.”[7]
Recent news
20 May 2026: Intuit cut 17% of its full-time workforce (~3,100 roles), disclosed Mailchimp revenue declined year over year in its Q3 FY26, and named “rightsizing” Mailchimp with a focus on “improving churn and customer acquisition among small customers”; restructuring charges of about $300M; early reports say cuts touched deliverability and engineering teams.[52] Price changes 2025–26: none found beyond the unsubscribed-contact billing rule.[8]
Most common complaints (near-verbatim)
“They automatically switched me to a more expensive plan and charged me extra.” — Shopify App Store, Aug 2025[25]
“Subscribers have been falsely inflated with fraudulent orders so they can charge us more.” — Shopify App Store, Aug 2026[25]
“Closed my account 6 months ago and have still been getting charged.” — Shopify App Store, Nov 2024[25]
“No longer king of email since it was acquired” by Intuit; open rates dropped. — Shopify App Store, May 2025[25]
“Advanced features and automation are locked behind higher-priced plans.” — G2[38]
Read: Mailchimp prices like Klaviyo without Klaviyo’s Shopify depth, and its parent has just told investors the product is shrinking and being “rightsized.” For a Shopify brand it is the default only if you already live in QuickBooks. For a competitor, its 12,988-review G2 corpus is a free map of what a generalist gets wrong for e-commerce.
3.4 Drip Email-only for new accountsNo free plan
Tiers & prices
Single plan: “$39” per month for 1–2,500 contacts with “unlimited email sends”; the page is a calculator and does not list higher tiers.[10] Third-party guides: $89 at 5,000; $154 at 10,000; $349 at 25,000; $449 at 30,000; $1,199 at 100,000.[11][12] A 500-contact store pays the same $39 as a 2,500-contact one. Unlimited sends apply “up to 32,500 subscribers.”[12]
SMS add-on
“SMS marketing is not available to new users … only accounts that previously enabled SMS can continue using it.”[12] Drip’s help centre: “SMS is only available to customers in the United States that have the Support All People feature enabled,” by request to support.[13] The homepage does not mention SMS.[55]
Free-tier limits
None. “14-day free trial. No credit card required,” but “unlimited emails are not available during your free trial”; the trial allows “up to 2,500 contacts” and “100 emails total.”[10][12]
Positioning
“All the ecommerce email power you need. None of the bloat you don’t.” “Switch and save up to 40% on your email bill”; live chat “under 2 minutes”; 97.3% CSAT; free migration for lists over 17,500; Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and “40+” integrations.[55] Plan includes “up to 50 workflows,” “unlimited sub-accounts,” “open API access.”[10]
Reviews
Shopify App Store: 4.6/5, 51 reviews (listed since Oct 2019; 6% one-star).[26] G2: 4.4/5, 480 reviews.[40] Capterra: 4.4/5, 188 reviews.[42]
Marketing
Switching-cost SEO and price comparison; the homepage is built around “migrated to Drip.”[55] Negligible Shopify App Store presence — 51 reviews in seven years versus Omnisend’s 2,965.[26][22]
Recent news
May 2024: eliminated the free tier and set the $39 minimum.[54] A June 2026 pricing tracker reports a median actual customer payment of about $500 a year across 353 verified purchases, well below list.[11] Funding, layoffs, M&A 2025–26: none found. Revenue: not disclosed.
Most common complaints (near-verbatim)
“We are being charged $39 a month, but are unable to open the app or send out emails.” — Shopify App Store, Feb 2022[27]
“The workflow for abandoned carts never worked… no emails being sent out… app made me lost money.” — Shopify App Store, Mar 2023[27]
“The cost is really high… too much for small business: more made for businesses that generates a high level of sales.” — Capterra[42]
“You could not search by name! How ridiculous is that. You can only search via their email address.” — Capterra[42]
“The A/B testing currently doesn’t let you test multiple email subject lines simultaneously.” — Capterra[42]
Read: Drip has retreated to a defensible niche — flat $39 email-only for lists under 2,500 with human support — but it is now the only vendor here where a new Shopify brand cannot add SMS at all. Its Shopify complaints are old, few and about reliability; its current risk is irrelevance in the app store, not reputation.
3.5 Sendlane Acquired by Privy, Feb 2026Pay per send
Tiers & prices
Send-based, not contact-based: “Unlimited Contacts — Pay for sends, not profiles.” Pricing page shows $100/month as the entry point; a June 2026 guide reads it as “Professional from $100/mo for 50,000 email sends/month,” scaling to about $1,500 at 1.75M sends, with Enterprise “from ~$600” and Enterprise Plus “from ~$1,550” on annual contracts.[14][15]Caveat: the Shopify listing still shows Professional at $600/month and Capterra at $600/month, which predates the send-based model; a 500-, 2,500- or 10,000-contact brand pays the $100 floor if it sends under 50,000 emails a month.[28][43] Support tiers by contact count: Professional 0–9,999; Professional Plus 10,000+.[14]
SMS add-on
“SMS available starting at $0.009 per credit inclusive of carrier fees”; à la carte packs from 250 credits ($6.25) to 10,000 ($175), plus a $10 monthly activation fee.[14]
Free-tier limits
No free plan. “Give us a test drive for 60 days. The trial plan is limited to 100 contacts & 500 email sends.”[14]
Positioning
“Save money by unifying your stack, supported by a team that has your back.” Email, SMS, reviews and forms in one; support “often under 30 seconds”; 4.7/5 claimed on G2 and Capterra; comparison pages vs Klaviyo and vs Mailchimp.[57] Shopify listing: “Unite your email, SMS, and reviews under one platform to consolidate your tech stack.”[28]
Reviews
Shopify App Store: 4.2/5, 14 reviews — 3 one-star (21%).[28] G2: 4.6/5, 79 reviews.[41] Capterra: 4.2/5, 34 reviews.[43] Note that the homepage claims 4.7 on both G2 and Capterra; the live pages show 4.6 and 4.2.[57]
Marketing
Sales-led (demo requests), founder-style testimonials with attribution figures (“34.37% revenue attribution average”), and the “paying for contacts sucks” contrarian pricing message.[57][14] Post-acquisition, distribution shifts to Privy’s 6,000-brand base.[56]
Recent news
2 Feb 2026: Privy acquired Sendlane, terms undisclosed. Privy CEO Alex Persson: Sendlane “grew rapidly by addressing a real gap in the market, offering hands-on, personalized support at pricing that doesn’t punish brands for growing.” The release does not say what happens to Sendlane’s brand or pricing.[56] Layoffs: none found.
Most common complaints (near-verbatim)
“App doesn’t track metrics correctly. The beacon fails regularly and customer service is no help.” — Shopify App Store, Nov 2024[29]
“Pre-scheduled campaigns are not sent at the scheduled time and need to be manually dispatched.” — Shopify App Store, Dec 2023[29]
“Very poor support,” with contradictory information between support teams. — Shopify App Store, Feb 2024[29]
“Billed For Unused Emails” and the company was “unwilling to refund.” — Capterra[43]
“Missing basic things like template and campaign duplication.” — Capterra[43]
Read: Sendlane’s send-based pricing is the most interesting model in the set for a high-frequency sender, but a $100 floor is 2.5× Drip and 6× Omnisend for a 500-contact store, and the review base is too thin to reassure. The Privy deal makes it a bundle component rather than a standalone bet.
Priced on emails sent, with unlimited contact storage. Free $0; Starter “from 5,000 emails per month” — $9 at 5k, $17 at 10k, $29 at 20k; Standard/Business $18 at 5k, $35 at 10k, $65 at 20k; Professional from 150,000 emails; Enterprise custom for “1M+ contacts.”[16][17] Brevo’s pricing page rendered tier names but not dollar amounts to our fetcher; amounts are from emailtooltester (updated 5 Aug 2026), which also notes “tier-based caps” on contacts within Starter.[17] Translation for a Shopify brand sending four campaigns a month: 500 contacts ≈ $9; 2,500 contacts ≈ $17; 10,000 contacts ≈ 40,000 emails, above the 20k tier we captured.
SMS add-on
Prepaid credits by country: “100 SMSes to the USA costs $1.09” (≈ $0.011 each); the UK costs $3.45 per 100.[17] Extra costs: “$10 add-on” to remove the “Sent with Brevo” footer on Starter; dedicated IP “$251/year.”[17][16]
Free-tier limits
“Up to 300 emails per day,” unlimited contacts (“up to 100,000”), Brevo branding on emails.[16][17]
Positioning
“Turn every email, SMS, order, interaction into a lifetime customer.” Email, SMS, WhatsApp, push, live chat, chatbot, wallet, VoIP phone, transactional email and meetings; a sales CRM with pipelines; “Aura” AI agents for marketing, sales, data analysis and conversations; logos eBay, Louis Vuitton, Nestlé, IKEA.[59] Positioned against Salesforce and HubSpot, not against Klaviyo.[58]
Shopify presence
Brevo’s own Shopify app is “not currently available on the Shopify App Store”; merchants are directed to migrate to the Brevo PushOwl app (Brevo acquired PushOwl).[30][31] PushOwl: 4.8/5, 2,229 reviews, 1% one-star; bundles Free (500 emails/month), Plus $19, Power $79.[32]
Reviews
G2 (Brevo Marketing Platform): 4.5/5, 2,633 reviews.[39] Capterra: not retrievable. Shopify: see PushOwl above.
Marketing
Enterprise-logo positioning, European brand strength (France and Germany are its top two markets), M&A as a growth channel — 11 acquisitions to date, including PushOwl for Shopify distribution.[58][31]
Recent news
3 Dec 2025: €500M (~$583M) from General Atlantic and Oakley Capital, each taking 25%; valuation “over $1 billion”; ARR past €200M; 600,000+ customers; 1,000 employees; €100M+ earmarked for US expansion (US is 15% of revenue) and €50M for AI over five years; target €1B revenue by 2030, with acquisitions expected to drive 45% of that growth.[58] Layoffs: none found.
Most common complaints (near-verbatim)
“If your marketing strategy is not to spam your customers every day, but instead only write when there’s something relevant happening… you will fail these thresholds and your account will instantly be locked.” — Brevo PushOwl, Shopify App Store, July 2026[32]
“If you already have a Brevo account, you can’t connect it with Shopify.” — Shopify App Store, Apr 2026[33]
“Lost 27000+ subscribers… they deliberately do this to force you to stay!” — Shopify App Store, Nov 2025[33]
“Our accounts were deleted or suspended multiple times with little to no explanation.” — G2[39]
“Missing features in Brevo’s automation and design.” — G2 summary, 94 reviews[39]
Read: Brevo is by far the cheapest way to email 2,500 people, and the only vendor with unlimited contacts on a free plan — but it is a horizontal CRM that reaches Shopify through an acquired push-notification app, and its complaint pattern (account locks, suspensions, migration refusals) is the kind a small brand cannot afford to hit mid-Black Friday.
3.7 The built-in threat — Shopify Messaging (formerly Shopify Email) Free up to 10,000 emails/month
Pricing
Available on “Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus plans”: “10,000 free emails to send at the beginning of every month,” then “$1 USD per 1,000 additional emails” up to 300,000, $0.65 per 1,000 to 750,000 and $0.55 beyond. “Abandoned checkout automations are always free and don’t count towards the monthly limit.”[18] SMS: $0.012 per US message, $0.025 Canada, $0.06 UK; 12 countries supported; $2.15/month per toll-free number.[19]
Channels
Email; native SMS campaigns since the Winter ’26 Edition (January 2026); WhatsApp announced at the Spring ’26 Edition (17 June 2026), rolling out gradually with Meta’s template-message fees on top.[60] Listing tagline: “Email, SMS, and WhatsApp marketing made for commerce.”[34] Sidekick AI for copy and send-time recommendations.[61]
Reviews
Shopify App Store: 4.7/5, 4,433 reviews — the largest count in the category; 80% five-star, 3% one-star.[34]
What this means
For a store under about 2,500 contacts sending weekly, the platform tool is free and charges the same $0.012 per US text as Klaviyo. The standalones’ argument has to be segmentation depth, flow sophistication, reporting and deliverability — and the complaints below show Shopify is still weak on exactly those.
Most common complaints (near-verbatim)
“What’s the point of having a fully integrated app that cannot pull any stats from what you are sending out?” — Shopify App Store, Sept 2026[34]
“The message took about 13 HOURS to completely send TO 8 SUBSCRIBERS.” — Shopify App Store, July 2026[35]
“Shopify has decided to restrict how many sections you can include in an email.” — Shopify App Store, June 2026[35]
“Cannot pull from my own templates to do an automation… makes the whole thing useless.” — Shopify App Store, May 2026[35]
“Says my toll free number request was rejected, click to fix errors, none shown.” — Shopify App Store, June 2026[35]
Read: Shopify Messaging is good enough for a newsletter and an abandoned-cart flow, and it is free. It is not good enough for reporting, template reuse or SMS reliability, per its own reviewers. Every standalone vendor should assume the merchant has already tried it.
Monthly list prices, USD, monthly billing. *Sendlane charges per send; $100 covers 50,000 emails/month per a June 2026 guide, while its Shopify and Capterra listings still show $600 — see 3.5.[15][28] †Brevo priced at 5,000 and 10,000 emails/month, i.e., roughly four sends to the list. ‡10,000 contacts × 4 sends ≈ 40,000 emails, above the tiers we captured. §Shopify Messaging at 10,000 contacts × 4 sends = 40,000 emails → 30,000 billable at $1 per 1,000. Omnisend 2,500 and 10,000 figures vary ±$4 between guides.[5][63]

What the map says. Three bands. $0–$17 is the volume-priced band: Shopify’s free 10,000 emails and Brevo’s Starter tier, where a 2,500-contact store pays for sends rather than names and where nobody else competes. $39–$60 is the contact-priced band where five products sit within $21 of each other; Klaviyo and Mailchimp both landed on $60, Omnisend and Drip undercut by $16–$21, and the difference is decided by who counts as a “contact,” not the headline. Above $75 you are buying a bundle — Klaviyo’s SMS plan or Sendlane’s send-based floor — and the price only makes sense at higher frequency or list size. The lesson for a small brand is that the $39–$60 band is a coin flip on features and a real decision on billing rules; for a competitor, that the only uncrowded price points are “free like Shopify but with reporting” and “volume-priced like Brevo but built for Shopify.”
6Positioning map
Horizontal axis: how e-commerce-specific the product is (horizontal marketing/CRM suite → built for Shopify-style stores). Vertical axis: what the customer pays for (volume of messages sent → number of contacts stored). Dot placement is KeenScout’s qualitative judgement from pricing pages and marketing copy, not a survey.

Shopify Messaging
Open: send-priced, Shopify-native, with reporting
Open: vertical (one category) specialist
The upper-right cell — contact-priced, Shopify-native — is where the money and the complaints both are: Klaviyo, Omnisend and Drip all fight there, and all three carry “contact counting” grievances. The lower-right is held only by Shopify itself (free to 10,000 emails, reporting and automation weak) and, at a $100 floor, Sendlane. Nobody sells a send-priced, Shopify-first product with Klaviyo-grade reporting at Brevo-grade prices. Nobody on this map is vertical either: every product markets to “ecommerce brands” generically, while the categories with the most repeatable flows (supplements, apparel, beauty, food subscriptions) get the same templates.
7Gaps & whitespace
A bill you can predict. Klaviyo counts all active profiles;[46] Mailchimp counts unsubscribed contacts;[8] Omnisend counts non-subscribers who abandoned a cart;[6] Mailchimp overage rates are unpublished.[9] The most-liked complaints on the Shopify listings are about surprise increases and post-cancellation charges.[21][25] No vendor markets “we only bill people you can email this month” — the rule Klaviyo abandoned in 2025 — as a feature. It would be the simplest positioning statement in the category.
Send-based pricing for small Shopify stores. Brevo and Sendlane both charge per send, but Brevo reaches Shopify through a push-notification app and Sendlane starts at $100.[31][14] A 2,500-contact brand sending four campaigns a month uses 10,000 emails; Shopify gives that away.[18] A Shopify-native app priced at, say, Brevo’s $17 for 10,000 sends with Klaviyo-style flows and reporting is an empty cell.
Reporting that beats the built-in. Shopify Messaging’s top complaint is stats — “cannot pull any stats from what you are sending out.”[34] Omnisend’s G2 reviewers ask for “more detailed analytics without having to export data”;[37] Drip’s Capterra reviewers want a more flexible dashboard.[42] Reporting is the feature every challenger is weak on and the platform is weakest on.
Support that a free or $20 customer can reach. Klaviyo restricts support on free plans (“no way to get basic support unless you upgrade”);[21] G2 counts 40 Klaviyo reviews on slow support and Mailchimp reviewers say “support access depends on your plan.”[36][38] Omnisend, Drip and Sendlane all sell response time as a headline claim (4 minutes, 2 minutes, 30 seconds),[51][55][57] which tells you the leaders have left it open.
SMS that a new small brand can actually switch on. Drip has closed SMS to new accounts;[12] Omnisend removed its included-credit rebate;[6] Mailchimp credits expire monthly;[9] Shopify supports 12 countries.[19] Per-message prices have converged around a cent; the product gap is compliance set-up (toll-free verification “rejected… none shown”)[35] and rollover.
Deliverability honesty. Brevo reviewers report accounts “instantly locked” for sending too rarely and suspended “with little to no explanation”;[32][39] Mailchimp reviewers say open rates fell post-acquisition and cuts reportedly hit deliverability teams.[25][52] No small-brand vendor publishes inbox-placement data or explains sending thresholds in plain language before you hit them.
A vertical specialist. All six sell to “ecommerce brands.” Flows for replenishment (supplements, pet food), size-and-fit (apparel) and expiry (food) are built by every merchant from the same generic templates. A category-specific product with the right flows, benchmarks and copy on day one has no direct competitor here.
Same $60 at 2,500 as Klaviyo with a shallower Shopify integration.[8]
Opportunities
QuickBooks cross-sell to service businesses that also sell online.[53]
“Intuit Intelligence” if it ships beyond beta.[53]
Threats
Cuts reportedly hit deliverability and engineering — the functions reviewers already blame.[52][25]
Klaviyo/Shopify co-marketing and Omnisend’s explicit “vs Mailchimp” page.[47][51]
9What we’d do
9a. For a small Shopify brand choosing a platform — six recommendations
Under 1,000 contacts: stay on Shopify Messaging until it hurts. 10,000 free emails a month covers weekly sends to a 2,000-name list; abandoned-checkout flows are unmetered; SMS costs the same $0.012 as Klaviyo.[18][19] Leave when you need segment-level reporting or template reuse in automations — the two things its reviewers say it cannot do.[34][35]
Before comparing prices, compare the definition of a contact. Ask each vendor whether unsubscribed, unconfirmed, suppressed and never-emailed profiles count. Klaviyo (all active profiles), Mailchimp (unsubscribed) and Omnisend (non-subscribers with orders or abandoned carts) each answer differently, and it is why “my price went from 80 to 150” appears on every listing.[46][8][6][21]
At 2,500 contacts, treat Omnisend Standard ($44) and Klaviyo Email ($60) as the shortlist, and buy on your SMS plan. If you will text, Klaviyo’s bundle is $75 with 1,250 credits and Omnisend is $44 plus about $0.009 a message; at 1,000 texts a month those converge within a few dollars, so choose on flows and support access, not price.[3][4][5]
Pick Brevo only if you send rarely and do not need a Shopify-native app. At $17 for 10,000 emails with unlimited contacts it is the cheapest paid option by a wide margin, but its Shopify path runs through the PushOwl app and its reviewers report account locks for low sending frequency and suspensions without explanation.[17][31][32][39]
Do not choose Drip if SMS is in your 12-month plan, and do not choose Sendlane on the strength of its brand. Drip cannot enable SMS for new accounts;[12][13] Sendlane has 14 Shopify reviews, a $100 floor and a new owner whose plans for the product are unstated.[28][14][56]
Discount Mailchimp for e-commerce until Intuit says what “rightsizing” means. Same $60 as Klaviyo at 2,500 contacts, declining revenue, a 17% parent-company cut that reportedly reached deliverability teams, and reviewer reports of falling open rates.[8][52][25] If you are already in QuickBooks and send a monthly newsletter, it is fine; if email is a revenue channel, it is not the safe choice it used to be.
9b. For a small competitor entering the market — six recommendations
Price on sends, build for Shopify, and say the billing rule in one sentence. The send-priced cell is held only by Shopify (free, weak reporting) and Sendlane ($100 floor).[18][14] Something like “$19 for 20,000 sends, unlimited contacts, no charge for anyone you can’t email” is a positioning statement that every incumbent’s billing complaints write for you.[21][23][25]
Beat the built-in on reporting, not on templates. Shopify Messaging’s longest-tenured reviewer complaint is that it “cannot pull any stats”;[34] Omnisend’s G2 users export to other tools to dig deeper.[37] Ship segment-level revenue attribution, flow-level reporting and a plain-English deliverability panel before you ship a drag-and-drop editor.
Make support the product for the first 1,000 customers. Klaviyo gates support by plan and Mailchimp’s depends on tier;[21][38] the challengers all advertise response times as their headline.[51][55][57] Human chat for everyone, including free users, is expensive at scale and cheap at the stage where a Shopify App Store rating is being formed.
Own one vertical’s flows. Every incumbent is horizontal within e-commerce. Choose a category with a repeatable lifecycle — replenishment, subscription, seasonal — and ship its flows, benchmarks and copy pre-built. It is the same playbook that let Omnisend take share from Mailchimp by being “for ecommerce” when Mailchimp was for everyone.[50]
Sell SMS as “switch it on today, credits roll over.” The per-message price is a commodity at about a cent;[4][19][62] the pain is activation (toll-free verification errors with no fix shown), expiring credits and vendors withdrawing SMS altogether.[35][9][12] Guided compliance set-up plus rollover credits is a differentiator no incumbent markets.
Write the migration playbook for Klaviyo and Mailchimp refugees, and list on the Shopify App Store before anything else. Omnisend and Drip both lead with “migrate and save” offers;[51][55] the two triggers that generate switchers are Klaviyo tier jumps[46] and Mailchimp’s post-acquisition drift.[52] Review counts are the category’s trust currency (Drip’s 51 reviews after seven years are a warning),[26] so the app listing and a review-request loop come before paid acquisition.
First 90 days, sequenced: (1) publish the one-sentence billing rule and a public price calculator; (2) ship Shopify-native install, three flows for one vertical and the reporting panel; (3) list on the Shopify App Store with in-app review prompts from week one; (4) open human chat to free users; (5) launch the Klaviyo and Mailchimp migration guides with a price-comparison page that names their contact-counting rules, with citations, the way Omnisend does for Klaviyo.[3]
10Methodology & limits
What we did. Roughly 50 live web retrievals on 5–6 September 2026 across vendor pricing pages, homepages, help centres and partner pages; Shopify App Store listings and their filtered negative-review pages; G2 and Capterra listings; press releases (BusinessWire, PRWeb) and trade press (TechCrunch, Yahoo Finance, emailexpert); and three third-party pricing guides with stated update dates.
Pricing. Klaviyo’s and Brevo’s pricing pages are rendered client-side and returned only headers to our fetcher; Drip’s and Sendlane’s show a single starting price. For those we cite emailtooltester (updated 5 Aug 2026), Omnisend’s Klaviyo guide (15 May 2026), costbench and emailsoftwareinsights (June 2026) and Sequenzy (17 June 2026), and we say so at each figure. Two guides disagree on Omnisend’s 2,500- and 10,000-contact Standard price by $4 and $2; we show the more recent figure and flag the range. Sendlane’s app-store and Capterra listings ($600) conflict with its website ($100); we report both. Brevo prices are per email volume, so contact-tier equivalents are our arithmetic at four sends a month, stated in the table notes.
Reviews. Shopify App Store ratings, counts and star distributions are as displayed on the listing; complaint quotes are from the listing’s reviews filtered to one to three stars and are near-verbatim as the review page presented them. G2 quotes are from review text or G2’s own summary of reviews, as labelled. Capterra returned 404 for Klaviyo, Omnisend, Mailchimp and Brevo; only Drip and Sendlane resolved. Brevo has no listing of its own on the Shopify App Store; we used the Brevo PushOwl app.
Company figures. Klaviyo’s are from its earnings release and are audited-company disclosures; Brevo’s and Privy’s are from funding and acquisition announcements; Omnisend’s, Drip’s and Sendlane’s are self-reported website claims. We did not use revenue estimates from third-party estimator sites. Where a vendor discloses nothing current we wrote “not disclosed.”
News. We searched for funding, price changes, layoffs and M&A for each vendor January 2025 – September 2026. “None found” means our searches surfaced nothing we could open, not that nothing happened.
Maps. The pricing map is arithmetic on list prices at 2,500 contacts, monthly billing, no promotions (Omnisend’s current 30%-off-for-three-months offer is excluded). The positioning map is KeenScout’s judgement from pricing models and marketing copy; it is not survey- or usage-based.
Not compliance advice. SMS consent, toll-free verification and email-authentication rules vary by jurisdiction and carrier; nothing here evaluates any vendor’s compliance posture or deliverability performance.
